The Hollywood Brats came together in London, England in 1973 and recorded an album that would later be cited as one of the most influential of the punk era, even though it was not released in the UK until 1980. The band was led by Canadian vocalist Andrew Matheson, but probably their strength was Norwegian keyboard player Casino Steel (Stein Groven, February 1952, Trondheim, Norway). The rest of the band was Eunan Brady (guitar), Wayne Manor (bass) and Louis Sparks (drums). Grown Up Wrong (later issued as Hollywood Brats) featured elements of the Flamin’ Groovies and the New York Dolls welded to the ethos of the new wave, which endeared it to European fans and consequently some copies crept into the UK. However, by the time Cherry Red Records finally issued their 1979 single, the memorable ‘Then He Kissed Me’, and the album the following year, the band had long since gone their separate ways. Matheson was still recording with Brady, helping out in-between spells with the Tools and Wreckless Eric’s Last Orders. Steel joined the infamous London SS and played at a couple of rehearsals before Matt Dangerfield dragged him away to join the Boys in summer 1976.
